A three-year-old flagship can still be a smart buy, as long as you know what you're getting. This morning's price check shows the renewed iPhone 15 Pro (256GB, Natural Titanium, unlocked) at $571.56 on Amazon. That's $28.39 below the $599.95 we were tracking and $12.44 less than yesterday. It ships from Amazon, but it's sold by a third-party refurbisher (WS SPARKTRONIC at the time of our check). Before you buy, here are seven things to know, from battery health to a SIM detail that catches a lot of people out.

1. "Renewed" is a grade, not a brand-new phone

Amazon Renewed phones are inspected and tested by the seller, not by Apple. Expect a phone that works fully but may have light marks on the frame or screen. The listing promises accessories "equivalent to" the originals, which usually means a generic USB-C cable rather than an Apple one. The 3.8-star average is lower than most new products get. When you read the reviews, the complaints are mostly about cosmetics and battery health, not dead phones. Inspect the phone the day it arrives so you can still use the return window.

2. Battery health is the big variable

Amazon's renewed standard says that, when included, a battery must hold more than 80% of its original capacity. That's a minimum, not a typical number. Some buyers report phones in the high 80s or 90s, and others get one right at 80%. As soon as you set up the phone, open Settings → Battery → Battery Health and check the maximum capacity and cycle count. If the number is close to 80% and you're a heavy user, you'll want either a battery replacement soon or a different unit.

3. You get 90 days to change your mind

This listing comes with a free 90-day refund or replacement under the Amazon Renewed Guarantee. That's much shorter than a new iPhone's one-year Apple warranty. Some iPhone listings also offer a "Renewed Premium" option with longer coverage, usually for a higher price, so compare both options before you check out. Either way, don't wait until day 85 to test the cameras, speakers, Face ID and charging port.

4. US models are eSIM-only

There's no physical SIM tray on a US iPhone 15 Pro. An unlocked unit works with the major US carriers, but you'll move your number over as an eSIM, either through your carrier's app or during iPhone setup. That usually takes a few minutes. If you're on a smaller prepaid carrier, check that it supports eSIM activation before you buy. Also make sure the phone isn't still linked to someone else's Apple ID when it arrives. If it asks for another person's password, send it back.

5. USB-C is here, but the fast part needs the right cable

The 15 Pro was the first Pro iPhone with USB-C, and its port supports USB 3 speeds of up to 10Gb/s for moving big video files. Most included cables, including generic ones, are USB 2 speed, so you'll need a USB 3 cable to see the difference. For charging, any 20W or higher USB-C power adapter works. The Anker 65W 3-port GaN charger is $29.99 today, about $6 below our tracked price. It can charge the iPhone, AirPods and a laptop at the same time.

6. It still gets the features that matter in 2026

The iPhone 15 Pro has the A17 Pro chip and 8GB of RAM, which is why it supports Apple Intelligence while the standard iPhone 15 doesn't. You also get the 120Hz ProMotion always-on display, the customizable Action button, a light titanium frame, and a 48MP main camera with a 3x telephoto lens. Newer models have better battery life and camera upgrades. Still, for most people, the 15 Pro won't feel slow for several more years of iOS updates.

7. Budget for the extras, and compare against Android

Add a case and screen protector to the total on day one, since a renewed phone has already used up some of its luck. An Apple AirTag (2nd Gen) at $24.00 is also a cheap way to keep track of your keys or bag with Precision Finding. If you aren't tied to iOS, read our take on whether a renewed Galaxy S24 Ultra is worth it. It's $600 renewed today and has a bigger screen and a 5x zoom.

  • 120Hz always-on display, Action button, 3x telephoto

Cons
  • Battery may be as low as 80% of original capacity

Who should buy it: iPhone users coming from an iPhone 12 or older who want Pro cameras and Apple Intelligence without paying flagship prices. Who should skip it: anyone who wants a full warranty, or heavy users who'd be frustrated by a battery near 80% (budget for a replacement if so).

The bottom line

At $571.56, the renewed iPhone 15 Pro (256GB, unlocked) is a good value if you go in with your eyes open. Check the battery health on day one, confirm that your carrier supports eSIM, and test everything within the 90-day window. Do that, and you get a phone that still feels current for a lot less than a new Pro. Renewed prices move daily, so check the current price before you buy.
