7 Things to Know Before Buying the Sony WH-1000XM5 in 2026

The Sony WH-1000XM5 has been the default answer to "which noise-cancelling headphones should I buy?" for a few years now, and this morning it got cheaper. Our price check shows it at $198 on Amazon, down $50 from the $248 we last tracked. That's a strong price for a pair that still sits near the top of most ANC rankings. Before you click buy, though, there are seven things worth knowing. Some of them are reasons to jump; a couple might send you toward something else.

1. The noise cancelling is still among the best you can buy

The XM5 uses eight microphones and two processors to cancel noise, and it is especially good at the steady low rumble of planes, trains and air conditioning. Voices and sudden clatter get through a little more, as they do with every pair, but the overall effect is a quiet you notice the moment you switch it on. If you commute or fly a few times a year, this is the feature you're paying for, and it holds up well in 2026.

2. They don't fold up

This is the complaint we hear most. Unlike the older XM4, the XM5's ear cups swivel flat but the headband doesn't fold inward, so the case is wider and flatter than you might expect. It slides into a backpack fine, but it takes up real space in a small messenger bag or a packed carry-on. If compact travel matters to you more than anything else, factor that in.

3. Comfort is excellent, but the fit runs light and loose

At about 250 grams with soft synthetic-leather cushions, the XM5 is easy to wear for a long flight or a full workday. The clamp is gentle, which is great for comfort and glasses wearers, but it also means the headphones can shift if you look down quickly or try to wear them on a brisk walk. They're not built for the gym, and there's no official water-resistance rating, so keep them away from sweaty workouts and rain.

4. Battery life is long and charging is fast

Sony rates the XM5 at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on, which in practice means a week or more of commuting between charges. A three-minute top-up over USB-C gives roughly three hours of listening, handy when you realise at the gate that they're nearly flat. There's also a 3.5mm cable in the box for in-flight entertainment systems.

5. Sound is warm and tuneable, with LDAC for Android

Out of the box the XM5 leans slightly warm, with full bass that never feels muddy. The Sony Sound Connect app has an EQ if you want a brighter or flatter sound. Android users with a compatible phone get LDAC for higher-bitrate Bluetooth; iPhone users are limited to AAC, which still sounds good but loses that advantage. Multipoint lets you stay connected to a laptop and a phone at the same time, and calls are clear thanks to the beamforming mics.

6. There's a newer model — and that's why this one is cheaper

Sony has since released the WH-1000XM6, which folds again and improves noise cancelling further, but it costs a lot more than $198. That's the trade-off: the XM5 is no longer the newest, yet it gives you most of the flagship experience for well under half of what the successor launched at. For most people, the price gap is worth far more than the upgrades. The honest catch is that a 2022 design won't get as many years of new features as a newer one.

7. You may not need over-ear headphones at all

If you want something that fits in a pocket, earbuds can be the better buy. iPhone owners get seamless switching and good ANC from the AirPods Pro 2, which we saw at $249 today. For a cheaper all-rounder that works with both iPhone and Android, the Beats Studio Buds+ dropped to $89.95 from $129.99. And if your budget is tight, the Soundcore Q20i gives you real hybrid ANC for under $40, though its cancelling and build are a clear step down from the Sony.

The bottom line

At $198, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is easy to recommend. It still delivers the noise cancelling, comfort and battery life that made it a favourite, and the drop puts it below what many mid-range headphones cost. Just go in knowing it doesn't fold, isn't built for workouts, and has a newer sibling. If those don't bother you, this is one of the best-value headphone deals we've tracked this year.
